Ted Thompson, MD
Dr. Ted Thompson was raised in Bloomington, MN. He attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from St. Louis University Medical School. He has maintained a family practice in La Crosse, WI, since 1976.
Dr. Thompson feels that his unique clinic is only a partial solution to a very big problem, but that it is a step in the right direction.
Jeffrey Menn, MD
Jeffrey F. Menn, MD, trained in pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s and Milwaukee Children’s Hospitals before becoming a partner at Hirsch Clinic in Viroqua, WI in 1977.
Known as the “Cowboy Doctor”, he retired in 2014 from his Viroqua area practice which included pediatric, general practice and emergency room coverage. He is passionate about taking care of people.
In his spare time, Dr. Menn enjoys life on his beef ranch tending the herd and riding horses.
Greg Pehling, MD
Dr. Greg Pehling has joined the staff of Neighborhood Family Clinics in La Crosse, WI and Winona, MN. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School and the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Fellowship program in Endocrinology and Metabolism.
After over 30 years as part of the Endocrinology Department of Gundersen Clinic, Dr. Pehling is thrilled to begin a new phase in his professional life at Neighborhood Family Clinic and is grateful to be part of this effort. The focus of his practice will be to help patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes manage their disease.
He is interested in empowering patients with education and encouragement to manage their diabetes with oral medications; insulin therapy, including pumps; and lifestyle modification. Dr. Pehling lives in West Salem, WI. He has a stepson, Andrew; a daughter, Katie, who is the mother of his delightful grandson; and a son, Samuel, who is a college student in New York.
Angela Esquibel, MD
Angela is originally from New York and is a 2nd generation Chinese American. She is a graduate from the Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Rhode Island, where she was inspired to become a primary care physician.
She trained at the La Crosse – Mayo Family Medicine Residency and is board certified in Family Medicine. She is passionate about taking care of patients of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds. Her interests include: health equity, women’s health, global health, and education.
She enjoys time with her family, reading, staying active, and being part of the Northside Community Church.
Jeanette Abraham, MD
Family Medicine
Dr. Abraham started her medical career in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from The Medical College of Pennsylvania. She completed 2 years of a pediatrics residency, but then took time off when she started her family which grew to 5 children, including 2 that she adopted. When her youngest child started school, she returned to medicine, this time in Family Practice until retiring several years ago.
After a few years, when two of her children began their own medical careers, she realized that she wasn’t feeling fulfilled in retirement and truly missed the privilege of providing thorough and compassionate care to her patients. She is very excited to now be a part of Neighborhood Family Clinics.
In her free time, she enjoys oil painting, gardening, kayaking, and spending time with her grandchildren.
James Baumgaertner, MD
Dermatologist
Dr. James Baumgaertner, MD, is located at the Neighborhood Family Clinics in La Crosse, WI. He is a board certified Dermatologist, with special interests in dermatologic surgery and skin cancer.
Dr. Baumgaertner grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended medical school and did his residency training in dermatology at the University of Minnesota. From 1980 until his retirement in December of 2014, he worked as a staff dermatologist at Gundersen Clinic.
Personalized patient care is his passion. He lives in La Crosse with his portrait artist wife, Peggy.
Frank Bures, MD
Dermatologist
Frank Bures, M.D., was the first dermatologist in Winona and worked at the Winona Clinic from 1978-2013, when he retired. Originally from Iowa, he attended Drake University for music education and spent his military duty in the US Military Academy Band at West Point, 1965-68. He attended medical school at the U. of Iowa, Iowa City, did his internship in Denver, CO, and dermatology residency at the U. of Wisconsin. in Madison,WI, before coming to Winona. He has been dermatology consultant to the Mayo-St. Francis Family Practice Residency, from 1978 through the present, Interstate Medical Center, RedWing, MN, from 1984-2000, Skemp Clinic dermatology, from1988-2013, and Vernon Memorial Hospital, from 1988-2005.
He and his wife, Ruth, live in Winona, are both still very active musically, and find time for 7 grandkids in Minneapolis and Oregon. Dr. Bures’s medical column Healthful Hints began in the Winona Daily News in 1982 and continues today. He received Physician Communicator of the Year 3 times from the MN Medical Assn., was awarded teacher of the year and received a lifetime achievement award by the MCHS-FSH Residency.
David Capelli, MD
Pediatrics
Dr. David Capelli has been a board-certified pediatrician since 1999. He was born in Schenectady, NY, near Albany and raised in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls area, on Grand Island. Go Bills and Sabres! After receiving his Bachelor of Science at Cornell University in 1992, he accepted a scholarship from the US Army to attend Chicago Medical School (Rosalind Franklin University). After graduating with his MD in 1996, he entered active duty in the Army and completed his pediatrics internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Ft. Bliss (El Paso, TX) and then his pediatrics residency at Madigan Army Medical Center at Ft. Lewis (Tacoma, WA). He then served as a staff pediatrician for the children of soldiers stationed at Ft. Irwin, CA (National Training Center) for 3 years before resigning his commission and accepting full time employment with Mayo Clinic Health System in La Crosse and Onalaska in 2002 until January of 2022. He did a mix of general pediatrics seeing newborns through age 18, mostly in outpatient clinic. He also covered labor and delivery call, newborn and special care nursery coverage and admitted pediatrics patients through the ER and outlying clinics for most of the time he was there.
He was voted “Best Pediatrician” in the 2023 Best of La Crosse County online poll. He lives in Onalaska with his wife, Amy. They have 7 children. He looks forward to providing personalized care while serving you and your family.
Fred Kupfer, PA-C

Fred is a native of Northern New Jersey, a graduate of UMDNJ with an associate’s degree as a paramedic in 1981. He then graduated with a BS/Physician Assistant from Long Island University, Brooklyn NY; in 1988. He completed a post-graduate residency in General Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx NY, ending in 1990. He earned his Master’s degree in 2000, from University of Nebraska, specializing in Orthopedics.
Fred has worked in several surgical specialties such as Burn Surgery, General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and several other specialties (Urgent care, Emergency Room, Family Practice, Corrections, Rehabilitation). His orthopedics experience includes hand/microsurgery practices (Navy Medical Center, San Diego and Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN), joint replacement and general orthopedics (fractures, sprain/strains) at Olmsted Medical Center and Sharp Rees-Stealy, San Diego.
Aside from patient care, he was an adjunct clinical instructor at University of Wisconsin Physician Assistant program for several years and program director for Medical Assistant program Minnesota School of Business / Globe University.
Katie Stewart, PA-C

Katie Stewart, PA-C, graduated from UWL PA program in 2009. She has completed both inpatient and outpatient care. She has worked in cardiology, neurology and family practice. Her interests include heart disease prevention and maintenance, hypertension, cholesterol management, and migraines. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her four dogs and tending to her garden.

Doug Moericke, PA-C, DFAAPA, is a Physician Assistant with 33 years of Rural Emergency Department/Acute Care, Clinical Primary Care and General Surgery/First Assist experience.
He comes to Neighborhood Family Clinics after 33 years of Emergency Medicine at Tri County Hospital and Clinics in Whitehall, WI. He has also served in the Emergency Department in Black River Falls Memorial Hospital, Trempealeau County Health Care Center, and UW-La Crosse Student Health Center.
He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA) and is a Founding Member of the Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA), serving in all capacities on the Board of Directors. He has achieved Diplomat status with SEMPA. Doug is a graduate of UW-Madison Physician Assistant Program.
His interests include stewardship of the Wisconsin Timberwolf in the wilds of Wisconsin since 1974. Doug’s enjoyment of the outdoors is through the silent sports of backpacking, bicycling, kayaking, canoeing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.
Mary Duh, PA-C

Mary Duh, PA-C, graduated from the UWL-Gundersen-Mayo Physician Assistant program in 2009. She is certified through NCCPA and is currently going through recertification. She worked at Mayo Clinic in Dermatology for 12.5 years.
In October 2021, she welcomed baby #5 and made the decision to be a stay-at-home mom for some time. She homeschools her children, breeds double doodle dogs, manages their rental properties, is a Brand Partner with Young Living Essential Oils and has a small hobby farm with dairy goats, chickens and ducks. She dearly missed taking care of patients and welcomed the opportunity to do so with NFC. She loves taking a holistic, natural approach with patients whenever possible.

Katie Frie grew up outside of Viroqua, Wisconsin. She attended Winona State University pursuing Nursing. During this Undergraduate Nursing Program she worked as a Nurse Technician in a Rural Hospital in Viroqua, Wisconsin. After Graduating from Winona State she moved to Madison, Wisconsin where she worked at University Hospital and Clinics taking care of complex patients on the Inpatient Rehabilitation floor.
Having a passion for building relationships with patients and families drove her to advance her degree in Primary Care as an Adult and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner, graduating from UW Madison School of Nursing in 2011. She is board certified from the ANCC in both Adult and Geriatric Medicine. This has allowed amazing opportunities to care for very complex patients within an Internal Medicine clinic in Winona, Minnesota.
Rural Health, learning, and teaching have always been a passion as she began as an Assistant Professor for her Alma Mater within the Community and Public Health Nursing Educators at Winona State University. As a lifelong learner she is working on her Doctorate Degree in Nursing Practice and Leadership Innovation in Winona, Minnesota.
Katie is married and has three kids and two golden retrievers. In her spare time she and her husband remodel homes and run kids to and from sporting events.
Rachel Strasser, MSN, APRN, FNP-C, Family Practice

Rachel has been a nurse for almost 14 years. Her practice previously consisted of ICU and NICU nursing and most recently in cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery as a nurse practitioner. She is excited to now offer her cardiology expertise at the Neighborhood Family Clinics and to expand on her general practice knowledge. In her free time she has her real estate license and is busy with her family and traveling whenever possible.
Lori Miskell, DNP, FNP-C

Lori Miskell, DNP, FNP-C, is originally is from La Junta Colorado. She moved to Wisconsin in 2000 and loves this area. Has been a registered nurse for 27 years specializing in emergency medicine, critical care, and hospital operations. Graduated from Winona State University in Winona, MN where she received her Master’s degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Lori has a passion for volunteer work and has made several trips to the Pine Ridge reservation. She lives in Holmen, WI with her husband, Mike, and has three children; Olivia, Jeremie and Autumn, and has the joy of having four grandchildren. She enjoys, outdoors, fine food, biking, painting and reading. She loves the model of care that NFC provides to the community and is excited to be a part of our team.
Amy Todd, APNP, FNP-BC

Amy is a board certified Family Nurse Practitioner born and raised in SE Minnesota. Prior to becoming a Nurse Practitioner, she worked as a Registered Nurse in critical care, medical/surgical, pediatrics and postpartum care. She graduated with her Family Nurse Practitioner from Maryville University in St. Louis, MO.
Amy started her career as a practitioner at NFC where she enjoys taking care of a variety of ailments while providing holistic care. She has a special interest in natural or functional medicine, managing headache/migraine concerns, preventative family medicine, doing minor procedures, caring for those suffering with mental health issues and more.
Amy has her own individual business endeavors, always looking to learn more as a practitioner. She adores her dog Simon, and supports her spouse in all his business endeavors as well.
Sue Bock, CPNP APNP

Sue grew up on a farm in rural Minnesota. She received her bachelors in nursing from Viterbo University. She obtained a masters in nursing and nurse practitioner degree from University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is a certified pediatric nurse practitioner (CPNP), however she enjoys seeing patients of all ages.
Sue has many years of work experience with children and young adults with cancer. Most recently she worked at Mayo Clinic for 10 years in the ear, nose, and throat department. Sue feels comfortable performing minor office procedures including lesion excision, suturing, management of epistasis, and biopsies.
She resides in Holmen, WI with her beloved springer Remi. She has 3 grown children. In her spare time she enjoys anything outdoors including gardening and helping on the farm.
Sue works in our Onalaska clinic.
Sherry Harris, DNP / FNP

Sherry is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). Sherry graduated from Winona University earning her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. She returned to school at Indiana State University first earning her Master of Science in Nursing: Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) and then returning to complete her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). She is board certified in family medicine.
Sherry Harris specializes in family medicine and in providing care for all ages. For over 20 years, Sherry Harris has cared for children and adults in a variety of settings, including in-patient hospitals and out-patient practices. She has dedicated much of her nursing career to working with individuals to meet their health goals. Sherry provides high-quality comprehensive care, including well-child visits, treatment of minor illnesses and injuries, and support in managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Sherry enjoys partnering with her patients and their families in caring for their health.
Outside of work, Sherry enjoys spending time with her family and two small dogs. She is also an avid gardener and loves being outdoors.

She’s worked in Neurology with a focus on headache for 5 years. Christina practices medicine with an integrative and holistic mindset.
Outside of work, Christina spends time with her husband & has two daughters entering college over the next couple of years. She also enjoys yoga, reading, and traveling.

Jilayne ‘Jil’ Karr is a board-certified, family nurse practitioner, licensed to treat patients from newborns to older adults. She has a Master of Science in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Jil has been a full-time college instructor of anatomy and physiology for 14 years. She enjoys educating her students and patients on ways to achieve optimal health and wellness. Jil also maintains an active nursing license and works as a cardiopulmonary nurse on-call at a local hospital. She believes in a patient-centered approach where she and the patient work as a team. In her free time Jil enjoys camping, running, and spending time with her family on their hobby farm.

I am a Wisconsin Licensed Professional Counselor. I graduated with a Master of Science degree
from Winona State University in School and Community Mental Health Counseling in 1997. I also
graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Viterbo College (University) in
1993. I am a compassionate, culturally competent, mindful licensed professional counselor who
has 27 years of experience.
I specialize in providing care to children (6-12), Adolescents (12-18), and Adults (18+) from diverse
backgrounds with unique needs and struggles seeking individual counseling. I look forward to
helping those who are struggling with symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress, relationship issues,
and career and life adjustment issues related to grief, loss, and change. I would be honored to join
you on your journey towards change as we work together to help you find the holistic balance and
wellness you desire. I will work to empower you to gain insight into your thoughts, feelings, and
behaviors, as you gain awareness, help, hope, and healing.
